How it works

We confirm the authority and review your labels

Application is filed with documents and fees

The Legal Metrology department issues the registration

Timeline

15 to 30 working days. Government processing times are outside our control; we track and follow up on every application.

If you skip it

Penalty exposure: Packing or importing without registration, or selling packages with non-compliant labels, attracts fines under the Legal Metrology Act and Rules. Customs can hold imported consumer goods without LMPC, and marketplaces may delist listings.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need LMPC to sell loose goods?

No. LMPC applies to pre-packaged goods. Loose sales still need verified and stamped weighing scales.

Who issues it?

The state Controller of Legal Metrology for packers and manufacturers in that state. Importers can apply to the central Director of Legal Metrology or the state Controller.

When should I apply?

Before you start packing or importing. The rules allow 90 days from commencement, but customs and marketplaces often ask for it at the first shipment.
